A woman’s breasts play a significant role in defining body image and femininity. Breast enlargement or breast implants are a common procedure sought by many women to address issues of size and shape as a means of improving their self image and self confidence.

Before you make the decision to pursue breast augmentation surgery, there are many factors to consider. One of the first steps is the choice of Cosmetic Surgeon. When finding your surgeon, you need to take into account the following factors:

• the qualifications and training of the Cosmetic Surgeon
• whether the surgeon is a member of the Australasian College of Cosmetic Surgery(ACCS)
• the work of the Cosmetic Surgeon – it is usually possible to see photographic examples indicating the quality of their work (remembering of course that every patient is different and has a different outcome)
• the information with which your Cosmetic Surgeon provides you, including recommendations based on your personal characteristics and desires and a surgical assessment of what is achievable and appropriate
• where your surgery is to be performed
• whether your surgery will be performed under sedation or general anaesthetic
• recovery period from surgery – for example, time taken off work, what activities need to be avoided (such as heavy lifting or strenuous exercise)
• realistic expectations and outcomes of surgery
• risks of surgery

A consultation with your Cosmetic Surgeon should include:
• A comprehensive discussion of your medical history
• discussion of your aims and desired results of surgery
• discussion of how your personal characteristics impact surgical outcomes, including the size and shape of your breasts, your skin type, your overall body shape
• discussion of implant size, typically including ‘trying on’ implants to simulate a desired size and shape
• recommendations by your Cosmetic Surgeon as to an appropriate surgical plan and surgical technique
• discussion of the risks and potential side effects of surgery

It is always recommended that you seek at least two opinions when considering surgery. Choose the Surgeon that you feel is the most qualified and experienced to perform your surgery, with whom you feel most comfortable, and that you feel has given you all the information you require.
