Also known as breast augmentation mammoplasty, breast enhancement or breast implants, breast augmentation is a surgical procedure that involves the insertion of breast implants to increase breast volume and size and enhance breast shape. Many women desire bigger, fuller breasts to enhance their silhouette and proportions. Often women seek breast implants to restore volume and shape to their breasts following pregnancy and breast feeding that has left the breasts lacking in volume and sagging. In these cases, it is also sometimes recommended to perform a breast lift. Obviously putting an implant in an already sagging or droopy breast will only add weight and result in the breast sagging further. In this instance, a breast lift will address the sag or droop and the use of a breast implant will restore volume and shape.
Deciding to have breast augmentation surgery is a major decision. It is extremely important for a woman considering breast implants to be fully aware and informed about the procedure. This includes the safety of the procedure, understanding the choice of available breast implants, the placement of the breast implants and the surgical procedure and technique best suited to you.
What is the best Type of Breast Implant for you?
There are different types of breast implants, most commonly saline or silicone. Saline implants consist of a silicone shell filled with sterilized saline liquid. The saline is harmless as its composition is similar to the saline found in blood plasma. The advantage of a saline breast implant is that the size of the breast implant can be modified during the surgery and there are certain types of saline breast implants that allow for a gradual increase in size post operatively. However, saline breast implants are susceptible to rupture and leaks, rippling and deflation. The breast may also tend to feel like a “bag of water” instead of having a natural feel.
In contrast, silicone breast implants consist of a viscous silicone gel contained within a silicone shell. Most women choose to use silicone breast implants due to their natural shape and appearance and because they feel like breast tissue to touch.
The newest development in breast augmentation surgery is the use of fat stem cells to grow new breast tissue and augment the breasts. It is has been developed to help women having had a mastectomy following breast cancer. This technique is still in the research phase and is not recommended or being utilized as a form of breast augmentation by any surgeon in the USA or Australia.
What you should consider before Breast Augmentation Surgery
There are various techniques of breast implant placement for breast augmentation, for example, placement of the breast implants either above or below the pectoral muscle. There are also variations in the incision placement, with most women choosing to have the incision under the breast in the mammary fold. In some cases, the incision may be around the nipple or under the armpit.
Other differences between breast implants include the size, shape and projection. Each woman should be evaluated as an individual; it should not be a ‘one size fits all’ approach. Your own characteristics, including the size of your frame and shape of your chest and existing breast tissues, in addition to the look you are seeking, all contribute to the Cosmetic Surgeon’s recommendation of the breast implant most suitable to you.
The first step in the process of breast augmentation is to make a consultation with the certified Cosmetic Surgeon. In your consultation, you will discuss with the Surgeon what you want to achieve and the Surgeon will talk to you about your options regarding breast implant type, breast implant size and shape, the correct placement of the breast implants and the incision and make recommendations for you. If you choose to pursue breast augmentation surgery, you may be able to have surgery within two to four weeks. Surgery typically takes between one and two hours for a breast augmentation (surgery will take longer if a breast lift is combined with the breast augmentation). If you follow the correct procedures and the Surgeon’s post operative instructions, full recovery is typically about 6 weeks, with most women returning to work within 2 weeks.
Women who have had breast augmentation typically describe increased self confidence that carries over into their everyday life, including social or work situations. Like the old saying, if you look good, you feel good.
