Why patients would consider a Thigh Lift or Thighplasty

A Thigh Lift or Thighplasty is considered by patients for a number of legitimate medical reasons to often address associated symptoms.

The common factors are related to aesthetic or functional concerns.Common reasons why individuals might choose to undergo a thigh lift:

  1. Excess Skin and Sagging: Following significant weight loss, ageing, or other genetic factors patients can develop loose or sagging skin around the thighs. A thigh lift can help remove the excess skin and tighten the remaining skin for a smoother and more toned appearance.
  2. Weight Loss Achievements: Patients who have undergone substantial weight loss, either through diet, exercise or bariatric surgery, are often left with excess skin on or around their thighs. A thigh lift can be part of the overall body contouring process following significant weight loss.
  3. Body Contouring: Thighplasty is often considered in a comprehensive body contouring plan to improve the overall shape and proportion of the lower body. It can complement other procedures such as abdominoplasty (tummy tuck).

4. Improved Self-Esteem: Loose or sagging skin of the thighs can be a source of self-consciousness and low self-esteem for some patients. A thigh lift for some patients can improve their body confidence and contribute to an improved self-image.

5. Chafing and Discomfort: Excessive sagging skin of the thighs can lead to medical issues of the skin such rubbing and chafing, which can cause discomfort and irritation. Patients can experience infections of the thigh creases and folds. A thigh lift can help to alleviate these issues by removing the excess skin and creating a smoother skin surface.

6. Aging Effects: The natural and chronological aging process can lead to a loss of skin elasticity and muscle tone. Thighplasty is aimed at addressing these age-related changes by removing excess skin and tightening the remaining tissue.

7. Cosmetic Preferences: Some individuals may simply desire an aesthetically pleasing appearance for their thighs. Thighplasty allows for the customization of the procedure to meet the patient’s cosmetic goals.

It is important for individuals considering a thigh lift to have realistic expectations and goals with regards to the surgery itself, long term outcomes and risks and/or complications associated with the surgery. It is important to consult with a qualified and appropriately trained Cosmetic Practitioner.

Dr. Bobby Kumar has received such training and experience and is a Cosmetic Surgical Fellow of the Australasian College of Cosmetic Surgery. The decision to undergo any cosmetic procedure should be based on a thorough understanding of the potential benefits, risks, and recovery process.
